Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is an unjustifiable and grievous breach of international law. It goes against the heart of the UN Charter and it must be utterly condemned. This is a horrifying assault on the sovereignty of a European democracy, and on the right of every Ukrainian to statehood, democracy and human rights.
There must be a unified and robust response from the United Kingdom and all other likeminded free democracies who hold these values dear. Earlier this week I called out the Government for introducing feeble sanctions. We cannot make the same mistake again.
The Government must take the strong action that Labour has been calling for. Britain must clamp down on all those with links to Putin’s tyrannical regime and rid the City of London of the dirty money.
My socialism is built on an unshakeable commitment to internationalism, and the belief that we must stand together against imperialist aggression to uphold human rights. I want to offer my heartfelt solidarity to the people of Ukraine. Britain must be prepared for the refugees that this war will create, and I will be working to ensure our country welcomes those who must escape this bloodshed.
