On 18th February, Mary joined striking university staff and UCU members on the picket line.

Mary spoke to staff at each location in Durham where there was a picket, listening to the concerns of staff who are locked in a dispute with their employers on pensions. University staff have been threatened a 35% cut to their guaranteed pensions by employers. Striking staff are arguing that better working conditions means that students will have better learning conditions. The support of students was also something Mary was happy to see on the picket line, with members of Durham Uni Labour Club standing in solidarity with striking staff members.

Mary also spoke at the picket line, and said this on supporting striking workers:

When workers feel it’s necessary to take industrial action, it’s the responsibility of Labour MPs to support them and to stand alongside them on the picket line. UCU Durham and UCU members across the country have my complete support and solidarity in this fight. One of us, all of us.
