Mary has reaffirmed her commitment to standing with workers on strike as the UCU start 10 days of industrial action from 14th January. She will join striking UCU members on the picket line on Friday 18th January

Speaking to Palatinate about the strikes, which take place in Durham and across the country, Mary said:

Durham University staff, and UCU members across the country, have my full support as they take industrial action over the ongoing disputes around pensions, pay, and working conditions. I firmly believe that every worker deserves a fair wage, a manageable workload, and security both in work and in retirement.

I recognise that these strikes will impact upon students, so I am heartened by the widespread student support for staff, including the formal backing of Durham Students’ Union. Students recognise that the current situation is not sustainable and that any improvements won by staff will also benefit students. I would encourage as many students as possible to show their support for staff and join them on the picket lines in the days ahead.
