Train pulling out of Durham Station
Train pulling out of Durham Station

On 11th February, Mary wrote to the Leader of Durham County Council, Liberal Democrat Councillor Amanda Hopgood, to nominate Durham to be the new home of Great British Railways HQ.

This follows the announcement by Transport Secretary Grant Shapps MP, that a new Headquarters for Great British Railways will be decided by competition.

Writing to Cllr Hopgood, Mary made the case for Durham to host the HQ saying

Durham and the wider county has a proud railway heritage, while the city boasts a well-connected railway station on the East Coast Mainline making it well suited to host this new nationally significant headquarters…

There are clearly many economic benefits that attracting GB railways Headquarters to Durham would bring, and therefore I am writing to invite Durham County Council to enter this process to ensure that Durham is fully considered as a potential location and to work with me to bring these jobs to the city.

This application affirms Mary’s commitment to fight for more jobs for the City of Durham, given that a nationally significant Headquarters would bring many jobs to the area. Mary will always shout up for Durham and make the case for the area on the national stage, recently seen in the full support of the Durham2025 City of Culture bid.

Dear Amanda,

Re: Great British Railways Headquarters

I am writing to you to bring to your attention the recent announcement (5th February) by the Secretary of State for Transport, Rt Hon Grant Shapps MP, that the Department for Transport has launched a competition to find a new city or town to host the headquarters for the new Great British Railways organisation.

In the Secretary of State’s letter, which I have attached outlines the process by which cities and towns can follow to make an expression of interest and be considered as the new national home of GB Railways. Full details can be found here: https://gbrtt.co.uk/hq/

I am sure you will agree that as Durham and the wider county has a proud railway heritage, while the city boasts a well-connected railway station on the East Coast Mainline making it well suited to host this new nationally significant headquarters.

Additionally, the Aykley Heads area and current County Hall Site, which has been previously earmarked for re-development for job creation, present prime potential locations that are well placed to house such a headquarters and the many jobs that this would bring to the area. The GB Railways bid
guidance states that bids should ideally earmark existing publicly owned land for the Headquarters. For this reason, the County Hall site would give Durham’s bid an advantage in addition to being in close proximity to the railway station.

There are clearly many economic benefits that attracting GB railways Headquarters to Durham would bring, and therefore I am writing to invite Durham County Council to enter this process to ensure that Durham is fully considered as a potential location and to work with me to bring these jobs to the city.

I look forward to your response and to discussing further this exciting opportunity to bring new Jobs and investment to Durham.
