Mary with City of Durham Labour members collecting food for foodbanks

On Saturday 18th December, Mary joined City of Durham Labour Party’s Market Stall Foodbank Collection to gather donations from the generous people of the constituency. As always, the people of the City of Durham were fantastically selfless in their giving and displayed the true sense of ‘Christmas Spirit’, coming together to ensure people had as good a Christmas period as possible. The donations were split between Children Have a Dream (CHAD) and the Trussell Trust. Foodbanks offer a sticking plaster over the larger issue of food poverty which desperately needs to be addressed on a national scale before it becomes completely normalised.

Mary said:

“A massive thank you to City of Durham Labour Party who organised the foodbank collection at this important time in the year for so many families. Special thanks must also be given to those who stopped by to donate food which I’m sure was greatly appreciated by all those who needed it at this time.

The work of CHAD and the Trussell Trust is vital in addressing the levels of inequality that we see as a result of the last 11 years of Conservative government. It is a source of shame that we rely on foodbanks to support families after a decade of Tory failure.”
