Durham has been named on the longlist of eight locations that could become the City of Culture in 2025 in a massive boost to the region.
The bid for Durham to become the City of Culture in 2025 is being spearheaded by Durham Culture, in collaboration with Durham County Council and Durham University, which is now taking the bid to the next stage of the process.
Becoming the City of Culture would provide the region with a significant boost to the economy and the progression to the next stage of the bidding has been welcomed by Mary.
I’m absolutely delighted that Durham has been long listed for the City of Culture 2025. To reach this stage of the process is hugely encouraging, and I hope that we move forward to the shortlist.
Being selected as the City of Culture would have a lasting impact on the cultural life of our towns and villages across the county, be a huge boost to the local economy, and highlight the truly magnificent history and heritage of Durham.
Mary is also keen to acknowledge the hard work of the Cultural Partnership in preparing the bid and taking it to the next stage.
The shortlist for the City of Culture 2025 will be announced in Spring 2022.
