On 20th May 2021 Mary Kelly Foy chaired the re-established ‘Friends of Durham University All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG)’ which was set up by Mary to connect Durham University with Parliament so that the region can have more involvement with policy.
The meeting was well attended by a variety of cross-party MPs with links to the University. Mary will chair the APPG which is also attended by Kevan Jones MP, Richard Holden MP, Sir Graham Brady MP, and Kate Osborne MP with Durham University acting as the Secretariat.
Current Durham University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Stuart Corbridge welcomed the establishment of the APPG saying:
“Durham University welcomes the inauguration of the APPG for the Friends of Durham University. We see this forum as a place where we can listen, share and contribute to collective responses to some of the issues facing the region in which we are located, as well as the significant challenges confronting society at this time.”
Mary tweeted about the meeting saying:
“Delighted to work cross-party & with Durham University to reform the APPG for Friends of Durham University. I want to ensure that there is a bridge between policy makers & the expertise at the University. I can’t wait to work on this project in the years ahead!”
The APPG meeting was reported in ‘Palatinate‘, the University Newspaper.
Mary looks forward to continuing the work of the APPG to further highlight the good work of the University and to help Parliament to learn from the expertise of County Durham.
