Mary Kelly Foy has been featured on regional BBC and ITV political news programmes this month, speaking on an array of local and national issues.
On BBC’s Politics North on 16th May, Mary responded to the Queen’s Speech which outlines the Government’s intentions for the forthcoming session of Parliament.
[The Queen’s Speech] was a missed opportunity. Social care wasn’t mentioned at all. It’s a ticking time-bomb, it’s a crisis that needs sorting out now and it wasn’t mentioned. The Government needed to set out a real, ambitious plan about how we are going to get out of the situation we’re in after the pandemic and this was just really tinkering around the edges. There was nothing in there about secure jobs, nothing in there about the public transport system here in the North East, nothing in there about strengthening employment rights…
Mary also spoke up for the concerns of over 1600 constituents who emailed to express their opposition to the Immigration Removal Centre in the neighbouring constituency of North West Durham.
There are thousands of people across the region who find this detaining of vulnerable woman who’ve been through the most horrific of crimes, immoral and inhumane. These kinds of institutions criminalise people because of where they come from and over the last 11 years this Government has overseen a discriminatory and unjust immigration system which created that hostile environment for refugees and asylum seekers. There are alternatives that are more humane out there that would treat people with dignity…
Mary also appeared on ITV’s ‘Around the House’ on the 20th May where she responded to the developing situation of the rise in COVID cases in North Tyneside
No one wants to see communities locked down again. Labour have been warning about this for months! Failing to introduce strong protections at the border has left us exposed to this mutation, it has led to a dangerous outbreak, and it might just derail the whole easing of lockdown. That would be a disaster and would really undo all of the great work the NHS has done with rolling out the vaccine.
Responding to the 2021 Local Election results in County Durham, Mary mentioned that the Conservatives need to deliver on their promises in a transparent fashion or “levelling up” will become another box in the Tories’ Buzzword Bingo
These are a very disappointing set of results, there’s no getting away from that. People over the last 10 years have become fed up, we know that Tory cuts and austerity has ran the county down, but yes, people want a change. Labour are listening to that.
It was interesting to hear the House of Lords Public Service Committee describe “levelling up” as confusing and lacking any clear goals. The Tories won on that slogan of “levelling up”, but if it really is going to tackle regional inequalities it needs to be transparent, people need to see where that money is going.
