On Saturday 2 May, City of Durham MP Mary Foy helped prepare and distribute vegetable packs and cookbooks to residents in Ludworth.
Ms Foy joined Councillor Lucy Hovvels, Dave Woods, chairman of Ludworth Community Centre and Shadforth Parish Council, along with his daughter Rachael Woods, also a parish councillor in organising the community response to coronavirus in the village.
The effort has been helped by Durham Area Action Partnership who awarded the Community Association a grant of over £5,000. Ludworth Community Association has also been supported by several community partners such as Tesco, whose Community Champion Joanne Reay has been assisting Ludworth Community Association as part of Tesco’s contribution to their local communities.
As well as providing a vegetable pack and a cookbook to every household in the community, Mr Woods plans to distribute hot meals to residents who are shielding twice a week.
This is part of Mr Woods’ long-term work in the community, offering a lunch club every Sunday as well as organising regular events in the community and running a foodbank out of the village hall. This work saw Mr Woods awarded the Chairman’s Medal, County Durham’s highest honour, in April of last year.
“Lockdown is a frustrating time for many people, myself included – especially when I prefer to spend my time as MP out and about in my wonderful constituency.
“When I heard about the brilliant work that Dave, Rachael and Councillor Hovvels are doing in Ludworth, I asked how I could support them, so they invited me to come by and lend a hand.
“It was great to visit Ludworth again. I really enjoyed delivering supplies to my constituents and having occasional chats over garden fences and through windows.
“I have to give great credit to Councillor Hovvels, Dave, Rachael and Joanne for the work they have done here. Every day, I have been hearing stories about the amazing community response in Durham and this is the latest example of this. A special mention must go to Dave who works tirelessly for his community and I cannot praise him highly enough. I’m looking forward to visiting his lunch club again once it is safe for it to reopen.”
